Pakistan’s Interior Minister traveled to Tehran on Monday to meet with officials of the Islamic Republic. According to IRNA news agency, Mohsen Naqavi is pursuing the expansion of bilateral relations and coordination on current matters between the two countries during this trip.

Ismail Baqayi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, had previously said that Naqavi’s trip is “fully within the framework of bilateral talks” and is intended to follow up on prior understandings, especially at the level of the leaders of the two countries. He said that there is no information about whether Naqavi is carrying a message or proposal from the United States.

Naqavi has traveled to Tehran several times in recent months. On 20 Mordad, he met with Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of the Islamic Republic’s government, Mohsen Rezayi, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister, and Eskandar Momeni, the interior minister. On 2 Shahrivar, Naqavi also arrived in Tehran together with Field Marshal Asim Munir, commander of the Pakistan Army.

Pakistan played a mediating role in the formation of the Islamabad agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic, and on 16 Mordad it also signed a joint defense pact with Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
