The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that the administration of President Donald Trump is preparing to impose broad sanctions on the International Criminal Court. According to this report, after a six- to seven-month deadline, the sanctions will ban more transactions with the Court and could limit its access to the U.S. dollar and a large part of the global financial system.

According to the report, it is not yet clear when the final announcement will be made, but some U.S. officials who were not named in the report have said the action may be finalized this week, alongside the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, or in the days after it.

The U.S. State Department spokesperson has not announced in advance what decision it will take regarding the sanctions, but has pointed to the position of Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, who views the International Criminal Court as a threat to U.S. sovereignty. The Wall Street Journal says the U.S. Treasury Department and the International Criminal Court did not respond to requests for comment.
