Narges Mohammadi, human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner, told the Associated Press in an interview that people in Iran are facing economic pressure caused by U.S. sanctions, alongside the consequences of war and an increase in domestic repression. She said these conditions have left people with “no room to breathe,” and that they are paying a very heavy price.

The Associated Press reported on Saturday, 28 Shahrivar, that a reporter for the news agency interviewed Mohammadi from outside Iran on Friday, while Mohammadi is in Iran. Mohammadi is currently temporarily released from prison on medical furlough under bail.

Mohammadi said: “It is these people who are paying a very heavy price.” She said that as a result of the continuation of the war and increased economic pressures, people in Iran are grappling with multiple crises.

Mohammadi also said that government repression has increased, but that part of society, especially the younger generation, continues to stand up for its rights. She said: “If you go to the streets, you will see a wave of resistance, awareness, and people’s determination to stand up for their rights.”
