🔻Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz says Israeli forces will remain in the Mount Hermon area (Mount Hermon) and Syria’s security zone “as long as there is an existential threat.”

During a visit to the security zone along the Syria-Lebanon border, Katz said: “Our message to the president of Syria is clear. When you wake up in Damascus in the morning and you look at Mount Hermon and you see the Israeli army, understand that we are here to defend our communities and our borders.”

Syrian officials have not yet reacted to Katz’s remarks. The Israeli army took control of the buffer zone late last year.

The Damascus government described the move as a violation of the 1974 agreement between the two countries. In 1967, Israel occupied most of the Golan Heights.

After the fall of Bashar Assad’s government in late 2024, Israel declared the Syria withdrawal agreement void and, in addition to the buffer zone, seized other parts of Mount Hermon (Hermon).

The peak of Mount Sheikh is the highest peak in Syria.
