🔺Iraq closes the border crossing with Iran; several other crossings will be closed at the request of the United States

▪The Iraqi government has closed the Cheaba border crossing with Iran to the movement of people and goods as of today, without announcing a reason.

▪According to a report by Sharq News, the crossing was closed from 6 a.m. A source in the Maysan provincial council described the reason as “technical issues.” A government source told Al Jazeera that some other crossings will also be progressively closed in the coming days at the request.

▪A government source told Al-Ain Al-Akhbaria that Ali Falah Al-Zaydi, the Prime Minister of Iraq, informed the leaders of the Coordination Framework that the government received a letter from the U.S. Department of the Treasury requesting that the border be closed with Iran. According to the same source, Iraq did not accept a full closure, and the U.S. proposed that only two crossings remain open.
