The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, in a report, has examined the inefficiency of laws related to jailing debtors in Iran’s judicial system. According to this report, individuals who are unable to pay their debts sometimes end up in prison, and to be released they must either prove their financial hardship or pay their debts.

Shahin Milani, director of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, said that imprisoning people because of debt deprives them of work and income and places additional financial and psychological pressure on their families. He added that imprisonment of debtors should be abolished and, instead, mechanisms should be considered to assess people’s actual ability and to protect the rights of creditors.
