🔶 Hard days for the Chancellor; repercussions of three election defeats for the Merz party

After successive and painful setbacks for the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) in three state elections in September, today the parliamentary faction of the Christian United Parties, with the presence of Friedrich Merz, the country’s chancellor, is consulting on the consequences of these defeats.

Michael Kretschmer, head of the government of the state of Saxony and a member of his party, urged that the failures be examined candidly and that a fresh start be made. He told the “MDR” network: «This matter also concerns individuals.»

Mario Voigt, head of the government of the state of Thuringia and head of the state branch of the Christian Democratic Party, also called the election defeat a historic turning point. Speaking on the sidelines of a closed-door meeting of the state faction of the Christian Social Union, he said that continuing on the previous path is not possible and that «a comprehensive review of federal government policies in Berlin» is necessary.
