🔶 For the third time, a woman becomes the General Secretary of Germany’s Christian Democratic Party

Franziska Hoppermann, a member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) and former party treasurer of the Christian Democratic Party, is set to become the new party’s General Secretary.

Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany and leader of the Christian Democratic Party, proposed Hoppermann for this post at a meeting of the party’s executive board in Berlin. The Hamburg-born politician will succeed Mr. Carsten Linnemann, who is expected to become the Federal Minister of Health.

As the party’s treasurer, Hoppermann has worked mostly behind the scenes until now, while also being a member of the party’s executive board. This senior business management expert has been serving as a representative for the Hamburg–Wandsbek constituency in the Bundestag since 2021. She is a member of the Budget Committee and the Digitalization and Modernization Committee of the government.

In addition, she chairs a special committee for the review of COVID-19, whose aim is to help Germany be better prepared for potential future pandemics.

On her personal website, Hoppermann wrote: “Even in childhood, I admired my grandfather, who had been a Bundestag representative for years.” According to her, politics has always been a large and everyday part of their family life: “From the very beginning, it was clear to me that I wanted to take part and shape the environment around me and social interactions.”
