🔸 Controversy in the world of football; UEFA may boycott the World Cup

UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, in response to FIFA’s investment plans, invited all European member federations to an emergency meeting on Thursday, July 30. The Norwegian Football Federation confirmed the matter on Wednesday in a conversation with the country’s state broadcaster.

The heads of 55 member federations will decide on the next steps at this meeting. According to some media outlets such as Sky and Bloomberg, one of the issues under discussion could even be the possibility of boycotting World Cup matches.

Brand Nuevendorff, head of the German Football Federation (DFB), described FIFA’s plan as a “very worrying message” and said the plan is not acceptable.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, vice president of the German Football Federation, also spoke of the existence of “consensus” among European countries.

He said: «At the World Cup, six European teams reached the quarter-finals and three teams reached the semi-finals. If European football stands united against this plan, it will have a very significant weight and impact.»
