Floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall inundated streets in the city of Tocopilla in Chile’s Antofagasta province on Tuesday (18 August) and moved multiple vehicles; multiple videos of the incident have been shared on social media. Chile’s president, José Antonio Kast, said in a post on X that, to deal with this situation, a state of constitutional emergency for disaster has been imposed in the Antofagasta province. Chile’s National Emergency and Disaster Response Agency (Senapred) also issued a red alert on Tuesday for the cities of Antofagasta, Taltal, Mejillones and Tocopilla.
