🔶 Darkening of relations between Kyiv and Seoul over North Korean war prisoners
South Korea, by accusing Kyiv of violating a confidential agreement regarding the transfer of two North Korean war prisoners to Seoul, and then denying the existence of such an agreement, has called for an official apology from Ukraine.
In a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York last Wednesday, Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, announced the transfer of the two soldiers and added that “capturing them alive was not easy.”
Hours later, Lee Jae-myung, the president of South Korea, wrote on social media: “I don’t know why the Ukrainian side violated the agreement and brought the matter into the open, but this action is very disappointing.”
On Sunday, September 27 (October 5), South Korea’s dissatisfaction also took an official turn, and Song Gi-hyeong, the senior secretary to the presidential office for public relations, called for an “explanation and official apology” from Ukraine.
