Daniel Thomas, an anti-refugees activist, has been charged with deliberately damaging property after a video was released that appears to show him striking a dinghy with a sharp object, such as a knife, in the English Channel, and he is in police custody.
Hampshire police said the 37-year-old man, known among his supporters as “Denny Tomo,” is also accused of refusing to provide the passcode for his mobile phone.
The police added that he will remain in custody and is set to appear in court on Friday via video link.
Police had previously said they were investigating a video that had been streamed live online. When Mr. Thomas appeared to attack a dinghy with knife blows, a French coast guard officer was also present.
