Tehran’s Court of Appeal overturned the four-year prison sentence of Hiwa Sefi-zadeh, an Iranian female singer, who had been sentenced after a live music performance in Tehran.

Aous website reported on Wednesday that the Court of Appeal acquitted Hiwa Sefi-zadeh of the charge of “encouraging corruption and prostitution.”

The ruling came after widespread criticism of the four-year prison sentence.

According to the published report, the court ultimately convicted her for what it described as “violation of public chastity,” sentencing her to pay a fine of just over 200 dollars and to three months of community service.

She had performed pieces of Iranian classical music on that program together with a music group, but security forces stopped the performance.

Public performances by women singers in Iran are generally not permitted and, in past decades, have faced serious restrictions.

After the sentence was reduced, she reposted her lawyer’s story on Instagram; a story in which the reduction of the punishment was confirmed.

In the same post, the singer wrote: “Hoping for a day when no voice will be silenced again.”
