The U.S. State Department warned New York wholesale and retail stores about the sale of luxury goods to officials of the Islamic Republic who traveled to the city to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

The ministry said the purpose of the warning was to inform the stores about legal restrictions related to the access of Islamic Republic officials to wholesale stores and luxury goods, and the risk of violating U.S. and United Nations sanctions.

Under U.S. regulations, the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, affiliated entities, Iranian government officials who travel to the United States for matters related to the United Nations, and their dependents, must obtain permission from the U.S. State Department before purchasing from wholesale stores or buying luxury goods.

The U.S. State Department emphasized that Washington will not allow the Iranian government to use diplomatic activities to increase the wealth of its officials, and asked businesses to comply with sanctions requirements with greater care.
