Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that five Iranians, including senior officials of the Islamic Republic and members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, were sanctioned due to their role in activities that disrupt shipping rights in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a statement by Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these five individuals were involved in military, legal, and communication activities that undermine international peace, security, and stability. The ministry did not name the five people in the text it published.

Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that with the imposition of new sanctions, the number of Iranians sanctioned under this country’s Special Economic Measures Regulations has reached 232, and the number of Iranian entities covered by these sanctions has reached 260.

Anita Anand, Canada’s foreign minister, said: “Freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is essential for global trade and energy security. The sanctions of 23 Mordad target individuals whose actions undermine these principles and the economic and energy security of the world.”

She added: “Canada asks Iran to reduce tensions and to respect international law on freedom of navigation.”
