Hengaw reported that Takhtam Ramzani, a 37-year-old prisoner who had been detained on charges related to drugs and who was serving her sentence in Ward 2 of Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, died on Tuesday, 20 Mordad, following the rupture of her gallbladder and delays in medical care and transfer to a hospital.

According to this report, Ramzani had been suffering severe pain in the area of her gallbladder four days before her death, and despite repeated follow-ups to receive medical services, she was not transferred to a hospital and was denied appropriate medical care. In prison, she worked as a laborer in the waste collection section.

In recent years, a number of prisoners in Iran have died as a result of torture or denial of treatment; however, the Islamic Republic has not accepted responsibility for these deaths.

The Prison Organization’s regulations emphasize prisoners’ right to receive medical services and be transferred immediately to medical centers, but human rights institutions have repeatedly warned about violations of this right.
