Bisset: The Strait of Hormuz will become “worthless” within two years; possibility of sanctioning a bank linked to Iran

🔸Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, on Tuesday, the 10th of Shahrivar, said that the United States would announce sanctions against a bank this week, and also stated that the Strait of Hormuz would lose its strategic importance within two years.

🔸Bessent, on the sidelines of the meeting of ministers and senior financial officials of the G20, hosted by the United States in Asheville in the state of North Carolina, said: “We will probably announce sanctions on a bank this week, and we will announce another one next week. We are in discussions with our partners on this; they have all come to the table and shown very good support.”

🔸He said the United States is also reviewing the possibility of targeting aircraft leasing companies and other entities that cooperate commercially with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

🔸Bessent added: “These might be different entities. It might be aircraft leasing companies that we will look into. It might be anyone who does business with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. We are identifying and tracking the Guard Corps’ assets.”

🔸He emphasized: “We will have no leniency. We will strangle this regime economically.”

🔸On Sunday, Bessent had told Reuters that the U.S. Treasury Department will likely announce new secondary sanctions every week, with the aim of increasing economic pressure on Iran, and that the initial focus of these sanctions would be on banks.

🔸He reported that the next step could be to completely cut off an entity’s access to the financial system based on the U.S. dollar.
