🔸 Azerbaijan’s public schools have started enforcing new uniform rules, and students and teachers who wear hijab are being prevented from entering schools; a move that has met with reactions from students and their families.
🔸 The Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan approved changes to regulations related to school uniforms on 30 Shahrivar. 🔸 For the first time, this resolution includes requirements for the coverage of teachers as well.
🔸 Although the regulations did not explicitly mention a ban on hijab, it was stated that clothing contrary to the uniform’s integrity and the “principle of secularism” is not permitted; a matter that has been taken in practice as an indirect ban on hijab.
🔸 Following this decision, preventing hijab-wearing students and teachers from entering schools has begun.
🔸 Reactions to the ban on hijab in the Republic of Azerbaijan are increasing, and protesters in Baku and several other cities have clashed with the police.
🔸 The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan announced the arrest of 37 people in connection with incidents related to these regulations. Those arrested are accused of “organizing actions that disrupt public order,” punishable by up to three years in prison.
