Australia’s prime minister said a joint counter-terrorism task force has been activated after an attack on an independent member of parliament.
Anthony Albanese said that Helen Haines, the member for the Indi electorate, was attacked outside her office in Wangaratta in the state of Victoria, and that a suspect has been detained.
He added that it is too early to announce details about the attacker’s motive, and said, “We’re praying for her full recovery.”
According to Australian media, Haines was hit by a vehicle when, at about 3:30 p.m., she was taking items out of her car.
Haines’s family said she is receiving medical care and that the extent of her injuries is not yet clear.
Reuters wrote that the representative is in critical condition following the incident.
Haines, a nurse and midwife, has been a member of parliament since 2019.
