The U.S. government, as part of further intensifying its immigration policies, has temporarily stopped or moved visa interview appointment times at its embassies and consulates around the world.

The U.S. State Department said the change was made due to a global training program for consular staff. The purpose of these courses is described as training officers to identify applicants who may in the future depend on U.S. public assistance, as well as to assess visa applications uniformly worldwide.

The decision was announced a few days after it was reported that Judge Janet Vargas of the U.S. federal judiciary declared the Trump administration’s policy, under U.S. President Donald Trump, to halt the issuance of immigration visas to nationals of 75 countries, including Iran, to be unlawful.

However, most Iranian applicants continue to face visa issuance restrictions due to a separate Trump order.

The U.S. State Department did not provide details about the duration of the training program or when interview appointments would return to normal. The Financial Times also reported that some applicants received emails about changes to their interview times, and that the new date will be announced later.
