The publication of a rare and extensive investigative report by Reuters titled “A Look at Reza Pahlavi’s Unsteady Efforts to Lead Iran” about his political activities, financial sources, and the numerous surrounding controversies involving Reza Pahlavi, the last shah of Iran’s youngest son, has once again placed a fundamental and challenging question at the top of Iran’s political news: Has a person who for decades has been recognized as the main figure of the opposition outside the country lost his political credibility and clout among Western decision-makers and within Iranian society?

This detailed report is based on interviews with more than 50 people close to him, his financial backers, and political activists. Reuters, while speaking of the slowing of the political engine and stagnation in the Pahlavi campaign, had at the same time officially stated his readiness to “lead the transition era”—a request that repeatedly met with cold disregard and even a tangible distancing from Washington, coinciding with the start of joint military attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran.
