Abdel el-Sayed, the elected Democratic senator from Michigan, welcomed a decision by Donald Trump, the U.S. president, to halt military aid to Israel until the end of 2026, and called for stopping the sale of American weapons to this country.

In an interview with National Public Radio (NPR), El-Sayed said: “A broken clock shows the right time twice a day. In this policy, the president is really right.”

He added: “I want to stop arms sales that are used for genocide and apartheid. We should spend this money on domestic needs.”

Sayed, who won the midterm election against his Republican rival, Mike Rogers, emphasized equal rights for Palestinians and Jewish Israelis.

Trump previously announced an agreement with Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, to stop the annual aid of about four billion dollars, but said that arms sales would continue. The current U.S. military aid agreement is also valid until the end of 2028.

The remarks were made after the Republicans’ defeat and amid rising debate over the costs of the Iran war.
