A senior U.S. official said that the Islamic Republic tried to persuade Hamas to not accept the proposal of a “peace delegation” for disarmament, but ultimately failed in this effort.

He said in a briefing with reporters: “The Islamic Republic would have preferred for Hamas not to accept this agreement, but the Iranian government has been letting Hamas go for some time. They no longer have the financial ability to continue supporting this group, and I think Hamas members have realized that they need to do something that is in their own interest and in the interest of the people.”

The U.S. official added that the offer of amnesty to Hamas members who would lay down their weapons and adhere to Trump’s 20-point plan was one of the most important factors that encouraged the group to accept the disarmament proposal.

The official continued: “The Islamic Republic tried to persuade them not to accept this agreement, but in the end we were able to overcome it.”

Previously, Axios reported that officials of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had recommended to a delegation from Hamas that had gone to Iran to attend the funeral ceremonies of Ali Khamenei that it should not rush to accept the “peace delegation” proposal.
