Reports of a possible meeting between Iran and the Gulf Arab countries about the future of the Strait of Hormuz

🔸The Financial Times, citing informed sources, says Iran’s foreign minister is expected to meet with his counterparts in the Gulf Arab countries on Monday, September 23, in the coastal city of Salalah, Oman, in an effort to “finalize a temporary agreement on managing traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.”

🔸Bloomberg, in a report citing people familiar with the matter, also wrote that the foreign ministers of the Gulf countries are considering meeting with Iranian officials next week to discuss the future of the Strait of Hormuz.

🔸Informed sources for The Financial Times described the meeting as an action by Oman and Iran to seek support for a temporary deal aimed at managing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

🔸If the meeting takes place, it would be the first meeting between senior diplomats from the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council and a senior official of the Islamic Republic since the start of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran.

🔸Bloomberg, citing its own sources, has also reported the likelihood of a meeting in Salalah, Oman, but at the same time wrote that the meeting has not been confirmed, and that an escalation of hostilities between Saudi-supported forces and Iran-backed Houthi rebels could complicate the plans.

🔸The sources said that even if the meeting is held, it is unclear whether all of the Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, as well as Oman, will participate.

🔸Radio Farda is not independently able to deny or confirm these reports, and Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not responded to questions about holding the meeting.
