China called reports that said Chinese institutions provided Tehran with satellite images before and after an Islamic Republic missile attack on a U.S. base in Jordan “unfounded.”

Gao Jiakun, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a press briefing: “We firmly oppose baseless speculation and unfounded accusations, without any evidence.”

Over the weekend, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed U.S. officials, that the Islamic Republic received high-resolution satellite images of the successful attack on the U.S. airbase al-Suwayt in Jordan from Chinese institutions. The missile attack on Tir 26 killed three American servicemen.

U.S. officials did not disclose the names of the Chinese institutions and did not directly blame Beijing.

U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the report on Sunday, saying: “When they say that China is spying on us, I say yes, we are also spying on them. It’s something we do. They basically do the same thing we do.”

The report was published ahead of Xi Jinping’s trip to the White House on Mehr 2.
