In a report on the trial proceedings of Hadi Matar, the attacker of Salman Rushdie, the New York Times wrote, citing prosecutors, that Matar had planned his attack in cooperation with an individual based in Iran named “Kamyar.”

According to the prosecutors, in May 2022 Matar wrote to “Kamyar” in Iran saying that he knows “where to find Rushdie,” but the issue is how to carry out the act. He then asked “Kamyar” whether the fatwa issued against Salman Rushdie is still valid or not.

The report, citing prosecutors, said that after the person living in Iran informed Matar that the fatwa for the killing of Salman Rushdie is still valid, Matar attempted to kill Rushdie.
