🔻 Sunday flights, 15 Shahrivar (6 September) at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport near Jakarta were canceled due to the release of ash following the eruption of Anak Krakatau. At least 209 flights were disrupted and 22,000 passengers were affected by this situation.

This volcano, located more than 150 kilometers from the airport, erupted on Saturday, 14 Shahrivar (5 September). In addition to ejecting lava, the sound of its explosions was heard up to about 700 kilometers away. Authorities also reported two other eruptions being recorded on Sunday.

Anak Krakatau, which means “child of Krakatau,” is located in the strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra. The reason for this naming is that this volcano formed at a location where a crater was created after the catastrophic Krakatau eruption in 1883. This eruption is one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in history, in which more than 36,000 people died.

In 2018 as well, the collapse of part of Anak Krakatau caused a tsunami that killed more than 400 people on the islands of Java and Sumatra.
