🔶 Fourth anniversary of Zhina Amini; what have we learned?

Today marks four years since the killing of Mahsa/Zhina Amini; a 22-year-old girl who, in ordinary attire and with her hijab, was detained in Tehran on the charge of “improper hijab.” After being beaten, she fell into a coma and died on September 16, 2022. But as was written on her gravestone: “She did not die; her name became a code for a movement,” which, in the shortest time, shattered the barriers of the 47 years of imposed imprisonment upon the bodies and lives of women in Iran.

A movement that swept across all of Iran—from Saqqez and Aychi, to Tehran and Isfahan, and Ahvaz—crossing the streets with the cry “Woman, Life, Freedom.” People raised their heads in protest with empty hands and sturdy chests against bullets and batons from the Guidance Patrols and security forces. Girls set headscarves on fire. Women, in mourning for Mahsas, cut their hair across the world. And people, demanding justice for the right to life and freedom, chanted “No to the dictator.”
