The Wall Street Journal wrote in a note about the views of officials from Donald Trump’s administration, President of the United States, regarding the durability of the Islamic Republic, which is changing, and the possibility of the Iranian government’s collapse has once again been raised in Washington.
On Monday, Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, said the collapse of the Islamic Republic could happen “within a few weeks or a few months.”
The Wall Street Journal wrote that the timing or occurrence of such a development is not predictable, but a shrinking economy, a drop in the value of the currency, citizens’ dissatisfaction, and the weakening of military forces have increased pressure on the Islamic Republic.
The newspaper also referred to statements by Masoud Pezeshkian, president of the Islamic Republic, about the dire state of the economy, and the reaction of Mojtaba Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, to his remarks.
As written by The Wall Street Journal, the blockade of Iran’s ports has caused a severe shortage of fuel and has confronted the government with the growing challenge of higher gasoline prices. The newspaper wrote that, given the history of protests after increases in gasoline prices, the current conditions could provide the basis for fresh protests.
