South Korea, the U.S. and Japan began five-day joint drills called “Edge of Freedom” on Monday in international waters in the east and south of Jeju Island.

Based on a statement from the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea, the three countries will use the drills to enhance operational capability and joint response in maritime, air and cyber domains.

The drills are being held as scheduled despite the reduction of the bilateral drills “First Freedom Shield” ordered by Donald Trump, the U.S. president.

According to reports, no American aircraft carrier is participating in these exercises due to the ongoing war with the Islamic Republic.
