On the eve of the fourth anniversary of Jina/Mahsa Amini’s death in the custody of the Guidance Patrol, Maryam Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, wrote in a message criticizing the continued pressure on women to enforce compulsory veiling, about the resistance of the Iranian people to these pressures.

This UN human rights expert wrote in a note in Persian on the X network: “This week marks four years since Jina/Mahsa Amini died in custody of the Guidance Patrol in Iran. After her death, the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement took shape. Women and men, from different ethnicities and provinces, set this movement in motion and demanded equal rights for women and girls.”

Ms. Sato said that the response of Iranian officials to these protests was, “resorting to lethal violence; a method they again used during the nationwide protests of Dey 1404.”
