Forces of the coalition led by Saudi Arabia, in response to a wave of attacks by Houthi militias supported by Iran in Yemen—which have injured dozens of civilians and caused fires at the country’s energy facilities—have promised a firm reply.

The night-time attacks by the Houthis, which reports say targeted several cities and urban areas in Saudi Arabia, indicate a significant escalation in the fighting; fighting that reignited again in July, after missile attacks on oil facilities and Saudi vessels, amid the spread of the Middle East war.

Turkey Maliki, the spokesperson for the coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia, said early on Tuesday, September 8 (17 Shahrivar), that at least 73 people, including women and children, had been injured as a result of these attacks. He described the attacks as “dangerous” and “meaningless.”

According to Maliki, the Houthi forces targeted “civilian and economic centers” in the cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran—all located in the west of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy said the attacks caused fires at several locations in the southern region of the country and led to some activities being temporarily halted.

Maliki said the joint command of the coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia—which has fought alongside in Yemen’s multi-year civil war against the Houthis—will “respond decisively with a hostile approach (by the Houthis).”

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on the X platform: “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia emphasizes its legitimate right to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty.”
