🔶 Detention of 9 former pilots of the Assad regime’s army in Syria
Syrian officials announced that nine former pilots of the Assad regime’s army, including three generals, were arrested on charges of involvement in deadly bombardments of cities and villages during Bashar Assad’s rule.
During the 13-year Syrian civil war, which left more than half a million dead, Assad’s forces, the former Syrian president, widely bombarded areas under the control of opponents. The Assad government was overthrown in December 2024.
SANA, Syria’s official news agency, reported citing officials that internal security forces, following several operations in Latakia province in the west of the country, arrested nine former army pilots accused of involvement in “war crimes against the Syrian people in several areas.” Three generals are among those detained.
According to SANA, the actions attributed to these individuals have led to the deaths of a large number of people, widespread damage to cities and villages, the displacement of residents, and the destruction of civilian homes and infrastructure.
Since the overthrow of Bashar Assad, Syria’s new officials have arrested dozens of security officials from the former government.
