The Peruvian government announced that, within the framework of its commitment to peace, international law, and the defense of democracy, it has cut its diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic.

In a statement, Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the situation in the Middle East threatens regional stability and international peace and security. The country also expressed concern about what it called the “erosion of democracy” in Iran and pointed to the crackdown on protests, violations of freedom of the press, discrimination against women and girls, and the prosecution of political opponents.

Peru also said that the restrictions imposed by the Islamic Republic and disruptions to international trade through the Strait of Hormuz from March 2026 are contrary to freedom of navigation and the right of passage through international straits. It warned about the impact of this on energy prices and global supply chains.

The Peruvian government also condemned what it called “incitement to violence and escalation of conflicts in the Middle East by Iran,” and denounced Tehran’s obstruction of the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency. It said that preventing inspectors from gaining access has faced the verification process, to prevent the production of nuclear weapons, with an obstacle.
