Israel will open its first embassy in Slovenia on Wednesday, which is a sign of warming ties after the formation of a right-leaning government led by Janez Janša.

Based on a statement by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new Slovenian government has “shown its friendship with Israel in words and deeds and supported Israel in the European Union.”

The closeness between the two countries comes at a time of growing diplomatic isolation for Israel. Britain, France and Canada have banned imports of goods from West Bank settlements.

Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s foreign minister, will travel to Slovenia for a two-day visit.

Student movements, a left-wing opposition party, and pro-Palestinian groups have planned a protest rally for the evening of Wednesday.

Under the previous government, Slovenia was one of the few European countries that recognized the Palestinian state.
