Hungary expels 10 Russian diplomats for “unacceptable activities”

🔸Hungary’s foreign minister announced that this country is expelling 10 Russian diplomats.

🔸Anita Orbán said the expelled Russian diplomats were engaged in “activities in Hungary that are unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention.”

🔸Without referring to details of these activities, she added that “this decision protects Hungary’s security and sovereignty.”

🔸Mrs. Orbán emphasized that “this does not mean ending diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue based on mutual respect and compliance with the law.”

🔸The former right-wing prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, was one of the few European leaders who still maintained friendly relations with Vladimir Putin. A staunch opponent of the European Union’s aid to Ukraine against Russia’s onslaught, he finally fell from power after sixteen years on Sunday, 23 Farvardin 1405.

🔸With the victory of Péter Magyar, leader of the party “Tisza,” in Hungary’s parliamentary elections and his rise to power as an EU-supporting prime minister who promised major changes, it appears that this country’s relations with Russia are also undergoing major shifts.

🔸Experts had previously predicted that Viktor Orbán’s defeat would deprive Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, of one of his main allies in the European Union.

🔸With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has been directly and indirectly drawn into confrontation with various European Union countries.

🔸In recent days, Germany’s government officially accused Russia of being behind a failed “hybrid attack” using a drone carrying explosive materials on the strategic airport in the city of Leipzig in August, and announced reciprocal diplomatic measures.
