🔻Deep concern expressed by the UN Secretary-General over an attack on civilians at a ceremony

Stephen Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said on Wednesday: “The UN Secretary-General has expressed deep concern about the resumption of the exchange of fire between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran during the past night. He is especially worried by reports of civilian casualties, including reports about an attack on a wedding ceremony. Attacks on civilians are in no way acceptable.”

Mr. Dujarric, who was speaking at the UN’s daily press conference, emphasized that: “The Secretary-General urges all parties to exercise the utmost restraint, to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law, and to refrain from any action or statement that could lead to further escalation of tensions. The Secretary-General still believes that there is no military solution to this crisis. Diplomacy is the only way forward, and he calls on all parties to return, without delay, to the path of dialogue and diplomatic efforts.”

A few days ago, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, had met and spoken with Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran, in Kyrgyzstan.
