In a report, the Ynet website wrote that the Islamic Republic, in recent years, has expanded cyber warfare against critical water infrastructure by targeting water systems, pumping stations, treatment facilities, and control systems made by Israel. According to this report, attacks on desalination plants show that military conflicts can easily disrupt the supply of drinking water in the Middle East.

With reference to chronic water shortages in the Middle East, Ynet wrote that many countries in the region depend on desalination plants and groundwater sources, and that this has made water infrastructure one of the most vulnerable targets in cyber and military wars. The report also adds that the water crisis in Iran had already, before the war and the recent protests, become one of the main challenges for the Islamic Republic.
