Wildfires continue to rage as Serbia swelters under extreme heat

Firefighters battled multiple wildfires across Serbia on Friday as extreme heat gripped the region.

Helicopters were deployed to water bomb a blaze cutting through forests in the Deliblato Sands nature reserve in Vojvodina, northern Serbia, an area that has already scorched at least 7 sq km. Locals in the village of Sumarak were evacuated as flames neared homes, though there were no reports of casualties.

Near Kraljevo, further fires forced residents to evacuate, with locals reporting more than 600,000 sq m of pine forest destroyed within days.

Europe, the world's fastest-warming continent, has been ravaged by record-breaking heat and destructive wildfires this summer, with France and Spain particularly hard hit – but problem right across the continent.
