UN independent fact-finding committee: The United States is responsible for an attack on a wedding ceremony in southern Iran
🔸The independent UN fact-finding committee on Iran said in a statement on Monday, September 23, based on reports and information received by the committee, that the United States was behind an attack on a house in Kouhestak in Hormozgan province during a wedding ceremony held there.
🔸On the evening of September 10, coinciding with U.S. attacks on southern Iran, a projectile struck the location of a wedding ceremony in Bandar Kouhestak, leaving five people dead, including two children, a woman, and dozens injured.
🔸The United States has not yet accepted responsibility for striking the wedding venue, but officials of the Islamic Republic have blamed the U.S. Army for it.
🔸The U.S. Central Command, CENTCOM, said it has begun internal reviews regarding the attack.
🔸JD Vance, the U.S. vice president, also said Washington is investigating the incident, but expressed doubt about whether the United States carried out the attack.
🔸Sara Hussein, head of the independent UN fact-finding committee, said on Monday in this regard: “These attacks once again serve as a reminder of the devastating human cost of the conflict between the United States and Iran. Non-combatants must be protected at all times, and due care must always be taken to ensure that civilians and civilian property are shielded from the effects of hostilities.”
🔸The UN committee in its statement asked all parties involved to fully comply with international law and to halt hostilities.
🔸According to the committee, the latest round of U.S. attacks on Iran “resulted in deaths and injuries among civilian families, including women and children, from minority communities that have already been marginalized.”
🔸In its statement, the committee also referred to another attack on a residential home in the city of Qeshm on August 8 which, according to reports, led to the deaths of three people including a two-year-old child, saying: “Both attacks took place in areas of southeastern Iran where minority communities reside. Kouhestak is predominantly inhabited by Baloch people, while Qeshm is home to a population that is predominantly Sunni. Both communities, as previously documented by the fact-finding committee, have historically faced structural discrimination and marginalization.”
