UN fact-finding committee calls for a halt to executions of defendants in the Aliakhani Square case in Iran

🔸 The UN fact-finding committee about Iran, in a statement on Thursday, called on the government of the Islamic Republic to immediately halt the execution sentences of defendants in the Aliakhani Square case in Isfahan—linked to the protests of last December.

🔸 The statement also reports, “based on reliable information,” that the families of at least two other defendants in the well-known “Aliakhani Square” case have been summoned for their final visit.

🔸 The case dates back to events of 18 Dey 1404 in the vicinity of Aliakhani Square, between Mulkshahr and Kaaveh in Isfahan, where officials of the Islamic Republic said that four members of the Basij and the Special Unit, named Hossein Ramzani, Mohammad Hamt i, Seyed Ali Khoshouyi, and Velayatollah Safri, were killed.

🔸 The committee to follow up the situation of detainees in Iran reported on Saturday, 20 Tir, that the Supreme Court has “confirmed” the death sentences of 12 protesters from December in Isfahan in the so-called “Aliakhani Square” case. A week later, two of these defendants, named Gol Mohammad Mohammadi and Erfan Esfandiari, were executed.

🔸 In its further statement, the fact-finding committee expressed serious concern that Islamic Republic officials have accelerated the execution of death sentences against the December 1404 protesters.

🔸 The committee had previously, in another statement, pointed out that during periods of social and political unrest in Iran, the number and speed of death sentences increase.
