🔻U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Wednesday, in his remarks in front of the Acropolis monument in Athens, while reviewing the history of ancient Greece up to the rise of industry in the United States, presented a picture of Western civilization that he said faces the danger of decline.

Rubio said that the world is at a “turning point.” Nations, especially in Europe, must return to the values of ancient Greece and “rebuild their institutions and alliances to confront these shared threats.”

He said: “We believe Europe can awaken from its long sleep and rekindle the fire that was burning here thousands of years ago.”

While speaking about cooperation, Rubio noted that “nations do not need to set aside their distinct identities in order to recognize their shared interests.”

Rubio, who is often referred to as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, pointed to what he considered global risks, including “extremist mullahs” in Iran and suicide bombers.
