U.S. President Donald Trump said South Korea intends to invest about $54 billion in a gas project in Alaska.

He said this in the Oval Office of the White House, alongside Dan Sullivan, a Republican senator from Alaska who is facing a difficult race for re-election in the midterm elections, adding that Mr. Sullivan has worked on this agreement and other Alaska agreements for nearly 20 years and that “now we are getting it done.”

Dan Sullivan has been a senator for two terms and is one of the longtime supporters of the Alaska gas pipeline project.

However, the general secretary of South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party says Seoul’s participation in the 1,300-kilometer gas pipeline project that connects Alaska’s northern coast to an LNG export terminal in the southern part of the state has not yet been finalized, and before committing to the investment, the project’s commercial viability must be assessed.
