The U.S. Embassy and consulates in Brazil stopped providing in-person consular services on Friday, October 2, due to security concerns.
The decision applies to all U.S. diplomatic missions on Brazilian soil.
American citizens who need urgent assistance have been advised not to go to embassy or consulate buildings. Emergency services will be provided by phone and email.
The U.S. State Department has not announced the exact reason for this decision.
The United States has also said it is in close contact and cooperation with Brazilian officials to address security issues.
