🔻As a result of a car hitting a group of pedestrians near a train station in the city of Caen, in northern France, two people were killed and 10 others were injured.

David Clouet, the local governor, told the media: “A car intentionally drove into pedestrians on foot in front of the train station.” He added that the condition of seven of the injured is critical.

According to French media, after a large-scale search operation in the Normandy area, a man was arrested who is believed to be the driver of the car.

Aristide Olivier, the mayor of Caen, said that investigators are trying to understand what led the driver to take the action.

According to eyewitnesses, before the incident, a confrontation had taken place between two groups.

One senior security official in Caen said: “At this time, the motive for this terrorist incident is not terrorism, but the investigation has just started.” He emphasized that all the victims were men between 17 and 40 years old.

According to Agence France-Presse, the suspect is a 26-year-old man born in Russia who was arrested 20 kilometers away from the site of the incident, in the port city of Ouistreham. 📷AFP via Getty
