Two giant oil tankers linked to China have bypassed the Strait of Hormuz, while the risk to shipping remains high and the outlook for normalizing traffic after Donald Trump, the U.S. president’s, hardline stance toward the Islamic Republic has grown dimmer.
Based on shipping-tracking data, the tanker “CV,” which was carrying Iraqi crude oil, was moving toward Hormuz on Tuesday while leaving the Persian Gulf, but it reversed course and is now stuck in the middle of the strait.
The tanker “Hestia” also entered the Persian Gulf from the coast of Oman early on Wednesday, but it changed direction and went out again. The reason for the sudden route change for these two vessels is not clear. Despite the threats, some vessels are still trying to pass through Hormuz.
