🔶Turkey submits the Mecca defense deal to parliament for approval
Turkey has submitted its defense agreement with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, known as the “Mecca Agreement,” to be presented to parliament for approval.
According to Reuters, three parliamentary sources said on Tuesday, October 20 (28 Mehr) that with this move, the second-largest army in NATO is moving one step closer to its formal commitment to mutual defense with Riyadh—at a time when Saudi Arabia is facing attacks by Yemen’s Houthis.
The three countries signed the joint Mecca defense agreement in August. Under the agreement, an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all members. However, in the joint statement released when the deal was signed, it was not clear what specific commitments each country would take on.
The three countries, at an emergency meeting of the coalition held in Riyadh earlier this month, agreed to ensure the rapid deployment of forces and military capabilities in Saudi Arabia.
