Turkey and Iraq, after a meeting between the presidents of the two countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, reached an agreement on the gradual transfer of the Bashiqah–Zelikan military base to the government of Iraq. Over the past decade, this base has been one of the most important points of contention between Ankara and Baghdad.

The two sides also emphasized the return of Iraqi sovereignty over the Sinjar region and the end of the presence of illegal foreign armed groups in this region.
