The Wall Street Journal, citing a knowledgeable U.S. official, reported that American forces fired at a ship flying the flag of Panama as it sailed in the Sea of Oman, because it was “attempting to violate Iran’s maritime blockade.”

According to the report, U.S. forces under the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) early on Tuesday, August 11, fired a missile from a helicopter at the cargo vessel “Vela Nova.”

The American official, whose name was not given, told the Wall Street Journal that the crew of the ship was transferred after the attack to another vessel. At present, no casualties or injuries have been reported, and the fate of all crew members has been determined.

Earlier, the British company in maritime risk management “Vanguard” claimed that the American missile hit a vessel and caused a fire that was subsequently put out.

The incident occurs as peace talks between Iran and the United States to end the blockade of the ports of the Islamic Republic by the United States, and to create a broader ceasefire, continue to remain at an impasse.
