The U.S. government sold for scrapping two sanctioned oil tankers that had been seized in the days after this country’s military operation in Venezuela.
Lloyd’s List reported on Monday that a Dubai-based offshore recycling company, “Global Marketing Systems,” purchased the two tankers last month for an undisclosed sum, and they are being destroyed in ship-breaking workshops in India.
The U.S. Coast Guard and special forces of the U.S. Army seized the tanker “Eira,” with a Russian flag, in the waters south of Iceland in Dey (late December/early January) last year. At the time, Washington said the vessel had been used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.
In the same month, the United States seized another vessel, which is now named “Lileao,” also flying the Russian flag, in the Caribbean Sea.
